چکیده
We report a fatal case of disseminated acanthamebiasis caused by Acanthamoeba lenticulata (genotype T5) in a 39-year-old heart transplant recipient. The diagnosis was based on skin histopathologic results and confirmed by isolation of the ameba from involved skin and molecular analysis of a partial 18S rRNA gene sequence (DF3).

The genus Acanthamoeba includes species of free-living soil and water ameba that have been implicated in a small number of human diseases. Acanthamoeba species have been identified as the etiologic agents in 2 well-defined clinical entities, amebic keratitis and granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE). Less commonly, Acanthamoeba species have been identified as the cause of disseminated disease...

We report a case of disseminated infection with Acanthamoeba in a patient with graft-versus-host disease after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) for acute lymphocytic leukemia. The infection involved the brain, skin, and lungs and occurred despite treatment with voriconazole for mold prophylaxis, and did not respond to treatment with multiple other agents reported to have activity again...
متن کاملFatal Granulomatous Amoebic Encephalitis Caused by Acanthamoeba in a Patient With Kidney Transplant: A Case Report
Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) due to Acanthamoeba is almost a uniformly fatal infection in immune-compromised hosts despite multidrug combination therapy. We report a case of GAE in a female who received a deceased donor kidney graft. She was treated with a combination of miltefosine, pentamidine, sulfadiazine, fluconazole, flucytosine, and azithromycin.
